RAIN GUTTER DISCHARGE AREA
The downspout from the rain gutters should discharge the water at lest five feet from the foundation. I can't stress this point enough. If the downspout is discharging the rain water right alongside the foundation, sooner or later you will have foundation damage and, if the house has a basement there is a good chance that you will have water penetration into the basement. Believe it or not, most water in the basement problems are do to water being discharged alongside the house. With the average size house, it is estimated that with a one inch of rainfall 800 gallons of water comes off the roof. Usually the first sign of water penetration in to the basement is staining on the interior foundation wall in the corner of the basement exactly where the rain gutter discharge is located on the exterior of the house.   All downspouts should discharge the rain water at least four feet from the foundation to limit the chance of water penetration into the basement. Believe it or not, Many times just extending the discharge area four feet from the house eliminates water or moisture penetration into the basement. Another problem related to rain gutters is overflowing rain gutters can cause water penetration into the house, particularly on a ranch or cape cod style house. The overflow water penetrates behind the upper fascia board and siding and into the house doing damage to the drywall.
