Roof Shingle How Many Layers Allowed
In New Jersey two layers are allowed for a very simple reason, the shingles weigh hundreds of pounds and over two layers the weight may be too much for the condition of the roof structure When having a new roof installed make sure you get all new flashing. There is little sense putting a new shingle over a thirty year old flashing and having the flashing leak within a year of have a new roof shingle covering installed. Another tip, check any tree branches over hanging the roof branches rubbing on a roof can damage shingles very quickly. And, branches touching the roof  invites carpenter ants. It seams that carpenter ants like the tree limb route to enter the house more than going up the side of the house.
