Gutters and Downspout Maintenance
Gutter and downspout requires clean out and maintenance at lest once a year and if your located near trees more than once a year may be required. To defer the maintenance and let the gutters get blocked with leaves can cause some serious problems. When the gutters are blocked the rain water just washes over the gutter and deposits the water all along the side of the house by the foundation which over time can penetrate into the basement. The over flowing water can also spill over on the house side of the gutter which means there is a lot of water running down the side of the house which can cause water penetration in through the siding and into the house walls, or water washing down the side of the house can penetration into the house around a window. There is one more thing I should mention, the downspout discharge area should be at least four feet from the side of the house. Many downspouts discharge the rain water right up along side the foundation and over time the water could damage the foundation and penetrate into the house. In fact, many times water in the basement is right in the area where the water is being discharges from the downspout.
