Garage Fire Door and Firewall
Garage Fire Door and Firewall
For fire safety the door from the garage to the house should be a solid wooden door or a door with metal covering on the garage side of the door. The reason being, hopefully it would take twenty minutes for a fire to penetrate through this type door. A hollow door or a door with glass in the door is a safety hazard. Also the wall between the house and the garage should be a fire wall. In plain English that means that the wall covering on the garage side should be 1/2 inch thick, one hour rated gypsum board and if there is living space above the garage the ceiling also needs this type gypsum board. The gypsum should be sealed with fire tape to seal the joints and there should be no holes or opening in the wall for a fire to penetrate into the house The 1/2 inch and 5/8 gypsum is much heavier which makes it much harder to work with but the fire protection is worth it. Note, holes in a garage wall or ceiling compromises the fire wall protection. The reason the fire regulations for a garage are so detailed is because many fires start in the garage. The garage seams to be a popular place for storage for a host of dangerous chemicals such as: gasoline, pressurized cans of paint, cleaning chemicals and a host of other items that could accelerate or start a fire.
a few other safety tips about garage safety are:
(1) organize storage in the garage so chemical products and gasoline storage cans can't be kicked over causing a chemical spill and a garage full of hazardous fumes.
(2) never store propane tanks for the grill in the garage, propane tanks should be stored outdoors for safety.
(3) Do not overload electrical outlets whereby a line can be accidentally yanked out causing a spark. if there are dangerous fumes in the garage, all it may take is one spark to start a garage fire.
