Furnace Maintenance and the Service Contract
A furnace service call should be conducted at least once a year. When you obtain a service plan make sure the company will call and conduct the service call once a year automatically. Some companies will charge you for  yearly service coverage and only service the unit when you call in an emergency. The problem with this type of service is that you can't call for service if you died of carbon monoxide poisoning. I first discovered this fact after I bought a new carbon monoxide tester. To try out the new tester I checked out my own furnace and found the reading over 2000 PPM which is off the chart for a radon test reading. A good reading of carbon monoxide is 0 to 28 PPM. Realizing that the flue and chimney were doing the job and exhausting the carbon monoxide to the exterior and we were safe. However if something happen to block the venting system and the carbon monoxide got into the house we could be dead. I called the utility company that we were paying for a service plan and they sent out a young man with the exact carbon monoxide test that I just bought. After he test the furnace he said, " yep, you have a high CO reading " and proceeded to adjust the burners till the reading was down to zero. It was at this point that the young man informed me that the utility company only makes a service call when notified that something is wrong with the furnace. As mentioned earlier that you can't call when your dead from carbon monoxide poisoning, I cancelled the utility company's contract and contacted a local heating contractor and hired him to automatically come and service the furnace once and year. The local heating contractor's charge for his service coverage was not that much different from the service charge of the utility company and he would come once a year and service the furnace. Lesson learned, hire the local heating contractor that comes once a year and services the furnace, it could save your life.
