Safety on Steps Carrying a Drink down the stairs
If the hand rail for the stairs is on the right and you are right handed carry the drink in your left hand so you can hold onto the rail with your right hand.. This statement sounds really stupid; you may be thinking everyone knows that if the hand rail is on the right you hold on with your right hand.
Oh yea, not so fast, If your right handed most people will carry the drink in the right hand because it’s the hand you’ll feel safer in carrying the drink because you don’t want to spill the drink. And the same holds true for left handed people. If there are two rails on the steps one on the right and one on the left there is no problem. However, if there is only one rail, carry the drink in the hand opposite the rail and hold on to the rail with the other hand. Most people carry a drink in the dominate hand and I can assure you it will feel funny carrying the drink in the non dominate hand and going down stairs.
Now lets say your right handed and carrying a drink in your right hand down the stairs that has only has one hand rail on the right side. If for some reason you trip or lose your balance your really going to go for a tumble because you can’t grab the hand rail on the right side because you have a drink in that hand and there is nothing on the left side to grab and break the fall. To sum up for safety, if the hand rail is on the right, carry the drink in the left hand, if the hand rail is on the left, carry the drink in the right hand. It sounds simple and easy but it appears that a conscious effort must be made to carry the drink in the non dominate hand.
