Safety Tip - Electrical outlets

If you still have those old type two prong outlets in your home, we recommend that the outlets be updated for safety. Install the newer three prong outlets that have a updated grounding system. In addition, when an outlet is needed near water we recommend installing the GFCI type safety outlet. The GFCI outlets are mostly installed in bathrooms and kitchens. Perhaps you're wondering what a GFCI outlet looks like. It's that outlet with the red  button reset you often see in the hotel bathrooms. The GFCI electrical outlet is one of the best safety inventions in the last 20 years. It has saved many a person from a severe electric shock.

OLD HOUSES WITH SLATE ROOFS

If your house has a slate roof there is a good change that it's over ninety  years old. Slate roofs need special roof maintenance, not every roofer knows how to repair and maintain a slate roof. If you can find a slate roof specialist try to get a yearly service program. Normally slates over ninety years old need annual sealer maintenance to avoid small roof leaks that can create wood rot damage and environmental problems. As an inspector it's rare that I have  inspected a slate roof without finding loose slates that need repair.  A good way to determine if the slate roof needs repair or sealer maintenance is to examine the slate roof with binoculars for loose slates. If your wondering what those metal things at the edge of the roof are that look like some type of hook, they are called ice breakers and they do just that in case ice slides off the slate
