Safety Tip - Child Safety in the Kitchen
One of the safest things you can do to protect a small child in the kitchen is turn the pot handles into the stove and not have the handle sticking out from the stove. This avoids a small child from grabbing the handle and pulling the pot down on themselves. Another suggestion is to have child locks installed on the kitchen cabinet doors particularly the sink cabinet where chemicals may be stored. The locks prevent a small child from getting into the cabinet and drinking a chemical or splashing a harsh chemical on their skin. Beside the base cabinet where chemicals are stored, another dangerous area is the knife drawer. When our children were small we moved the knife rack up to an upper cabinet to avoid the little hands playing with sharp knifes. As a father I can safety say, kids will go and do exactly what you don't want them to do.

Three Other Child Safety Tips
Large rocks on the property, all stairs and retaining wall or the absence
 of a retaining wall.
Large Rocks - Put a large rock on the property and sooner or later a young child will try to clime to the top of the rock to be king of the rock. I once did an inspection where the owner paid $ 1500.00 dollars to have a very large rock placed in the front yard. I was explaining to the potential buyer that the large rock is a safety hazard that children will try to climb the rock, when the seller spoke up saying the his 6 year old son broke his arm when he fell off the top of the rock. Large rocks look great but are dangerous safety hazard to children.
Stairs - All stairs can be dangerous to people of all ages but the most dangerous is at the top of the stairs that go into an attic. This would be houses such as a cape cod or a old colonial style house. At the top of the attic stairs there better be a good safety rail or a wall to keep the children away from the stair opening. If there is no safety rail and a child falls down an open stair well it's about an eight foot drop onto the steps which result in a serious accident.
Retaining Walls -A retaining wall is another area that children love to climb and walk on and if they fall from the wall serious injury can be the result. The absence of a retaining wall or some type of barrier to keep children from falling or rolling down a steep sloped area can also be a safety hazard. I once did an inspection on a house that had a very steep sloped back yard that had no barrier and at the bottom of the slope was a creek. Talk about a dangerous situation for a child this was it. The first job the new owner of this property did was to put up a fence at the top of the slope to keep his children out of harms way.
