Fire Safety in the Home
Fire Extinguisher - One of the first things a home should have for fire safety is fire extinguishers. The extinguishers should be place in an easy to get to areas, most people place the extinguisher in the kitchen, the laundry  and one on each floor. Every one in the household should know how to use an extinguisher, you don't want to have a fire blazing and have to read the direction on how to use the extinguisher.
Smoke Alarms - needless to say, the best thing one can do to avoid a serious fire is to install smoke alarms on every level of the house. And, change the batteries once a year and a good idea is to change all the smoke alarm batteries at the same time.
Fire Escape Exits - Everyone in the family should know the best way to get out of the house if there is a fire, particularly from the upper floors. The second floor area should have a rope ladder that can be hung from a window big enough to climb out of and down the ladder. The basement is another area that needs special attention when it comes to getting out in case of fire. Make sure there is at least one basement window a person can crawl through and make sure there is a ladder or something a person can use to climb up to and out the window.
Finished attic area bedroom is another location that needs special escape equipment, again a very long rope ladder may be needed and a window large enough to go through so the rope ladder can be used.
Door Dead Bolt Lock - Some people install a dead bolt that requires a key to open the door from the inside of the house, This is absolutely a fire hazard. If there is a fire and you have to go out that door and you can't find the key to open the lock, your in real trouble. Every proper safe dead bolt lock should have a thumb latch on the interior side of the house that can be open by just  turning the latch, no key is needed to open the door. The keyed dead bolt is a safety hazard that should not be taken to lightly, people have died because they could not find the key to open the door and escape the fire.
Clothes Dryer Fire - many a fire has been started by a fire in the clothes dryer and most times the fire is caused by the same problem, lint build up in the back of the dryer and in the vent line. To help avoid a dryer fire, clean the hand filter every time you use the dryer and have the vent pipe cleaned out once a year. The laundry is a another good location to keep one of the fire extinguishers.
Kitchen Fires - Of all the areas in the house the most prevalent places for a fire to start is in the kitchen. The following are some recommendations on how to avoid as much as possible kitchen fires:
(a) Never leave the kitchen when cooking, especially while baking, frying, or roasting food.
(b) Don't wear loose clothing, loose clothing can catch fire very easily from an open flame.
(3) Don't leave gloves, towels, paper products near the burner section on the top of the range.
